豊国揮毫奇術競は妖術師を描いた37枚の連作である。奇術と聞くと現在では手品の意味が強いが、蛇や蜘蛛、蛞蝓、龍などを自在に操ったり火遁の術、変装などのあやかしの術を使ったりすることである。
傾城花子は天狗小僧霧太郎という盗賊団の頭の変装した姿であるが、実は吉田松若が系図の詮議のため盗賊となっている。
