豊国揮毫奇術競は妖術師を描いた37枚の連作である。奇術と聞くと現在では手品の意味が強いが、蛇や蜘蛛、蛞蝓、龍などを自在に操ったり火遁の術、変装などのあやかしの術を使ったりすることである。
粂平内左衛門長盛は九州浪人で江戸赤坂に道場を開き、夜ごと辻斬りに出たが、のち悔い改めて鈴木正三の門に入り、仁王座禅を修したという。東京浅草寺にある石造りの座像は、平内が罪業消滅を願って通行人に踏みつけさせた自像といわれるが、のちに「踏み付け」が「文付け」に解され、縁結びの神とされるようになった。
