"Iwaya" means the cave, and this cave is filled with stone Buddha statues.
This cave belongs to the Washihara-Ji temple, and it placed deep in the mountain.
Inside the cave, there are 15 statues of Buddha, and we can also see the Buddha figure carved on a rock face.
These statues are carved in the Kamakura-period, and it is the almost same period of the attack of Mongol. Japanese had created a lot of statues in this period, for overcoming the crisis of the country.
"Famous Places in the 60-Odd Provinces" is a series by Hiroshige depicting famous places throughout Japan.
All of the works are vertically oriented, with innovative compositions such as a large foreground and emphasis on perspective.
