Yoshitoshi was the last great woodblock print master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, and One Hundred Aspects of the Moon is regarded as his greatest achievement.
Yoshitoshi's One Hundred Views of the Moon offers not only a compositional and technical brilliance but also an unfettered passion. From fantastical ghost stories to historical epics, elegant courtesans to fierce samurai, Yoshitoshi casts each tale in the moonlight.
Chushingura is a monumental work, one of the three plays (along with Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy and Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees) considered the pinnacle of puppet-based Kabuki drama. It is ultimately a story of revenge but goes well beyond the realm of that genre, portraying a series of momentous incidents triggered by the sexual conceit of a cunning villain and encompassing masters and retainers, husbands and wives, parents and children, and brothers and sisters. Kabuki’s greatest actors have honed their craft on these roles for countless audiences over the years. A beautiful and grand masterpiece.
