豊国三代は豊国の門人で国貞と名乗った。天保15年豊国二代を称した。（実際には豊国三代）作画期が長く、その作品の量も膨大なものになっている。特に役者絵・美人画等の人物の描写に定評があり、当時の浮世絵界を風靡するほどの勢いと力を持っていた。
落ちこぼれ浪人一家の物語。ヒロインは父を殺されたお岩。その恨みが凄い。犯人が夫とは知らず、捨てられ、毒薬を与えられ、無残な死を遂げ、復讐をする。夫伊右衛門はお岩の亡霊に悩まされ続ける。「仮名手本忠臣蔵」のパロディで、アッと驚くトリックがふんだん。
愛、欲望、男女の弱さが絡み合う怪談劇の傑作。
