Otsu-e is one of the names of the painting genre which was a popular local product of Otsu, Shiga prefecture. Otsu-e was popular for the souvenir and also as an amulet for tourists.
The catfish which is painted on the right was called "Gourd-Catfish", was generally depicted with a Japanese monkey that is trying to hold down the catfish, however, this print looks that it doesn't include the monkey. Since catfish had been believed to cause earthquakes, the depiction with the monkey was said to be auspicious.
