この作品は源頼光が平安時代の大盗賊である袴垂を捕縛しようとする場面。画面中央には暗闇に溶け込む黒い熊と、それを容易く呑み込もうとする大蛇が3枚続を大胆に横断して描かれている。
右端には袴垂が妖術を使いその後ろには闇夜に轟き渡る滝が。源頼光と四天王が日本刀を手に立ち向かう。
芳艶は国芳の門下で力強い筆法と彩色の艶麗さが評判となり、それを見た国芳は彼に「芳艶」の号を与えたという。若くして武者絵で才能を発揮し人気を博し国輝とは良きライバルで、刺青の下絵において競いあい、芳艶なら児雷也、国輝なら狐忠信と並び評された。
ところが30歳を過ぎたころから賭博を好み色街に入り浸ったため、破門される。しかし親友で博打仲間だった芳鶴の牢死がきっかけに再び画業に戻り、師匠の国芳に負けぬほどの迫力ある武者絵を次々と世に送り出した。

This work expresses Yorimitsu tries to capture Hakamadare who is a famous master thief in the Heian-era.
In the center of this work, there are a black bear blends into the darkness and a monster serpent is about to swallow the bear with ease. On the far right is a waterfall that roars in the dark night, behind which Hakamadare uses witchcraft. Minamoto no Yorimitsu and the big four confront Hakamadare with the Japanese swords in their hands.
Utagawa Yoshitsuya (1822 - 66) is an Ukiyo-e artist who was active at the end of Edo-era. Yoshitsuya was one of the pupils of Kuniyoshi.
