This is a series of the collaboration artwork of Yoshitoshi and Yoshiiku, and they produced 14 pictures for each.
The year of creation was from 1866 to 1867. The majority of the pieces take subject from the play, and are considered the pinnacle of Muzan-e, Ukiyo-e with cruel motifs.
The number "28" was considered that it was associated with the concept of "lunar mansions".
The blood in the picture was made of glue, and it was rumoured that he might have used real blood.
Yoshiiku was a pupil of Kuniyoshi and he studied with Yoshitoshi. After Kuniyoshi's death, he became one of the leading ukiyo-e artists from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period by depicting the manners and customs of brothels.
