This artwork with attracting bright colors is a Toy-Print and is depicting the cat vaudeville theater. On the stage on the 2nd floor, Bunraku is been performing. Bunraku is a Japanese puppet theater.
We can see the various cute head of the cats who are enjoying freely, for instance, admiring the show with their mouth is opening, drinking tea, and smoking.
At the entrance, we can also see a girl with their parents. It means that these places were open to men and women of all ages. At the stairs, a girl rushes too much and her mother grips her kimono. The girl says, "Don't grip it anymore", and she looks dissatisfied.
On the 2nd floor, the waitress cat is serving teas to the audiences. A cat on the middle-right says "Who wants tea?", and another cat says, "Here, here.". Yoshifuji depicts the details with humor, and he feasted children's eyes.
Yoshifuji was a pupil of Kuniyoshi and had created various genres of artworks. He particularly gained a reputation with the genre of Toy-Print, and he was called "Toy-print Yoshifuji".
Toy-Prints were created for children literally, so it is difficult to find out one in good condition.
