Utamaro is one of the most famous Ukiyo-e artists as well as Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Sharaku.
He learned the painting as a pupil of Toriyama Sekien, an artist of Kano school, and was discovered talent by Tsutaya Juzaburo, a publisher. After that, he created attractive artworks whose motifs are famous ladies and prostitutes, and it made his name famous.
His creative activity hadn't stopped even in the harsh reforms by the shogunate government, however, he was arrested in 1818 for tightening public morals, and he died 2 years after.
