国貞は豊国の門下で浮世絵師随一とも言われる数万点の作品を残し、国芳や広重を押さえて当時人気No.1を誇った浮世絵師である。22歳で浮世絵界にデビューしてから79歳で亡くなるまで、歌舞伎や吉原、当時の文化風俗など、まさに「江戸文化の全て」を描き切り、浮世絵界のトップランナーとして走り続けた大御所中の大御所といえる。
天保15年には豊国三代を襲名した。
