英山は父に次いで鈴木南嶺に絵を学び、更に幼馴染だった北渓を通して北斎派の画風も習得した。
歌麿の急死後に新進の絵師として現れた英山。物柔らかく、どこか儚さの漂う英山独自の美人画は、新しい時代の美人画をリードするものとなった。英山は文化中期から文政中期に美人画の揃物を多く制作し、2枚続の掛物絵に全身美人を描くスタイルを広めた一人とも言えるだろう。

Eizan had learned the painting technique from his father and later learned from Suzuki Nanrei. He also studied the techniques of Hokusai school by Hokkei who is Eizan's childhood friend. His name had become known as an Up-and-coming Ukiyo-e artist after Utamaro died suddenly. The depicted beautiful women created an atmosphere including the kind of impermanent beauty, and these artworks had led to the new wave of the period.
