急に雨が降りだしたのか、ひとまず手ぬぐいでしのぎつつ、慌ただしく傘を開く美人。縦二枚の構図にゆったりと全身が描かれた本作では、この細長い画面の中で美しい曲線が交差している。
英泉は、師である英山が描くような儚げな女性の美人画を描いていたが、その後、独自の妖艶な画風で人気を博することになる。
6頭身で胴長、猫背気味という、屈折した情念の籠った女性像が特徴である。英泉は深川のような岡場所や吉原遊廓の遊女を、妖艶さと強い意志を湛えた眼差しを持つ女性として描いた。江戸時代の後期、文化・文政期の退廃的な美意識を象徴的に表し、幕末の世情を反映したアクの強い画風を示している。

This artwork is a combination of 2 vertical o-ban prints.
Beautiful curves intersect in this long, narrow picture plane.
When Eisen started creating works, he had drawn women that were similar to the artworks of Eizan, his teacher. After the study as a pupil of Eizan, finally, he started drawing his own style and became to gain a reputation. In his original style, women are six-head figures and have a long torso and unique round-shoulders, and it had a unique fascination.
He depicted female prostitutes of the licensed quarters, for instance, Yoshiwara and Fukagawa. We can see the strong intentions and mystique in the eyes of the ladies, and it fascinated people in Edo. It was because of that the era was in the decadent atmosphere of the end of the Edo-era, and the people also found out the fascinations of momentary beauties.
