新形三十六怪撰は、主に妖怪や幽霊を主題として制作された連作である。
芳年は精神を病み、この連作を制作する際には復活の意味も込めて画号を大蘇芳年とした。虫食い状の画面4辺はデザインされたものであるが、精神に異常をきたした芳年の幻覚を描写したという説もある。

The "New Forms of 36 Ghosts" is a series of works mainly featuring ghosts and Japanese monsters.
Yoshitoshi had been suffering from mental illness, and when he started this series of paintings, he changed his painting name to Taiso Yoshitoshi to signify his recovery. The four insect-eaten sides of the image were designed, but some believe they depict Yoshitoshi's hallucinations due to his mental disorder.
