This is one of the most famous ghost stories in Japanese folklore, "Bancho Sarayashiki.
Okiku was the beautiful servant of revered samurai Aoyama Harima, and accidentally she breaks one of the ten plates which is a family heirloom.
Her master, Aoyama Harima, blames Okiku and she commits suicide by throwing herself into a well.
Soon after, it is said that a woman's voice counting the plates could be heard night after night from the well.

Kunichika was a pupil of Chikanobu and Toyokuni III and was called the "Sharaku of the Meiji era" by Kojima Usui, and it is said that Kunichika originated the new composition of depicting a single actor on triptychs. Kunichika is said to be an odd character, as Kunichika himself admitted. He had a habit of changing his residence and wives, and according to him, he moved 117 times. He had more than 40 wives, but none of them lasted long. He loved to drink and have fun, and even when he received money for his paintings, he would spend it as soon as he could, so much so that he spent his later years wearing only a kimono, and would ask the publisher to lend him a kimono when he would sketch actors for the Kabuki stage. However, when he saw someone in trouble, he could not help but help them, and sometimes he even gave guests' things to people who are suffering.
