広重は寛政9年、江戸八代洲河岸の定火消同心・安藤源右衛門の子として生まれた。幼少より絵を好み、15歳のときに歌川豊広の門下となった。初め、美人画や役者絵を描いたが、やがて「東都名所」のシリーズを皮切りに、数々の風景画を制作し、人気絵師として名を馳せた。

Hiroshige was born in 1797, the son of Ando Genemon of Yayosu-Gashi in Edo. He loved painting from an early age and became a student of Utagawa Toyohiro at the age of 15. At first, Hiroshige painted pictures of beautiful women and actors, but starting with his series of "Famous Places in Eastern Capital," he produced numerous landscapes and became famous as a popular painter.
