The people on the boat look up at the large fireworks display in the sky over Ryogoku. The bold composition depicts the fireworks at the back of the bridge and the boats in the foreground, yet the boats in the distance and the sparks from the fireworks are painted with great precision.
Hiroshige was born in 1776, the son of Ando Genemon, a fireman who worked as a fireman on the Yashirosu river bank in Edo. He loved painting from an early age and became a student of Toyohiro Utagawa at the age of 15. At first, he painted beauties and portraits of actors, but he soon became famous as a popular painter by creating numerous landscapes, starting with his "Famous Places of the Eastern Capital" series.
