Toshihide studied Ukiyo-e as a student of Yoshitoshi. The influence of his teacher can be seen in his dynamic portraits. During the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, he produced many war paintings, and although he collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1916, he continued to work energetically to preserve traditional woodblock print techniques for future generations.
