桂舟は硯友社の一員として新聞・雑誌に挿絵を描き始め、尾崎紅葉の小説には桂舟の挿絵を欠かせないとまでいわれた。桂舟が口絵において質、量ともに第一人者の仕事をしてきたことは疑う余地がない。
