菅原道真の失脚事件を題材にした歌舞伎「菅原伝授手習鑑」、その中でも人気のある演目のひとつ「道明寺」。
菅丞相（菅原道真）を暗殺しようと企む宿祢太郎が、鶏を早く啼かせて朝が来たと思わせ、偽の迎えの輿に菅丞相を乗せて連れ去ろうとした。
名取春仙は、日本画家として本格的な創作活動を行う一方、夏目漱石、島崎藤村などの新聞小説の挿絵や、石川啄木らの文芸本の装幀口絵等を手がけ、名を広めていった。
また、演劇界との結びつきも深かったことから、役者似顔絵も描いた。
大正時代以降には、版元・渡邊庄三郎のもと、役者絵版画を手がけて好評を博し、明治以来沈滞していた浮世絵版画に新風をもたらした。

“Domyoji” is one of the most popular Kabuki plays in “Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami”, a story about the downfall of Sugawara no Michizane.
Sukune Taro, who plotted to assassinate Kan Shojo (Sugawara no Michizane), made the rooster crow early to make them think that morning had come and tried to take him away in a fake welcoming palanquin.
Natori Shunsen, while active as a Japanese-style painter, also became famous for his illustrations for newspaper novels by Natsume Soseki and Shimazaki Toson, as well as the binding illustrations for literary books by Ishikawa Takuboku and others.
In the Taisho era (1912-1926) and later, he produced prints of Kabuki actors' portraits for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, which were very popular and breathe new life into Ukiyo-e print, which had been stagnant since the Meiji era.
