Based on the folk belief that the underground activity of giant catfish causes earthquakes, "Namazu-e (Catfish painting)" was published in large numbers after the Great Ansei Earthquake. Almost all of the Namazu-e were published illegally and without the signature of the artist to evade the authorities.
