中国の有名画題「瀟湘八景（しょうしょうはっけい）」のうちの「漁村返照」にならい、平家物語の玉虫御前と那須与一の伝説を描いた作品。平家側が舟の上に高く掲げた扇は、那須与一によって射落とされている。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇の日々を過ごしたが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たす。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

Based on the famous Chinese painting entitled "漁村返照," one of the "瀟湘八景," this work depicts the legend of Tamamushi Gozen and Nasu no Yoichi from the tale of the Heike clan. The fan held high above the boat by the Heike was just shot down by Nasu no Yoichi of Minamoto Clan.
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", and it created a sensation and it made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi", and he became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he had created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinated composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters, without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
