芳虎は国芳の門人で、幕末から開化期にかけて活躍した絵師の一人である。明治元年には錦絵師番付で貞秀に次いで第2位となり、トップクラスの人気があったことを物語っている。芳虎が最も活躍したのは明治維新前後の目新しい風俗を描いた横浜絵や開化絵の分野で、相当数の作品を残している。当時の多くの日本人にとっては未知の外国風景も描いた。

Yoshitora was one of the pupils of Kuniyoshi and was active from the end of the Edo to the Meiji era. In 1968, he became the second artist in the Ukiyo-e artist ranking.
He had primarily been known for his artwork depicting the new culture from overseas and the scenery of Yokohama, which thrived as an international town. In the era, general citizens had never seen the actual western culture, architecture, and fashions. Instead, people could know them from Ukiyo-es.
