かつて広大な武蔵野には多くの狐の姿が見られた。月光の下、人に化けるという狐が自身の姿を水面に確認する様がが描かれている。
「月百姿」は芳年が明治18-25年に発表した全100点の月をテーマとした作品である。8年を掛けて完結し、明治25年6月の芳年の死の直後に100作品に目録と序文を添えた画帖が発売された。幅広い画題と多彩な画風を駆使して描かれ、芳年の最後の大作・代表作の一つと評価されている。版元は滑稽堂秋山武右衛門である。

In the past, many foxes were seen in the vast Musashino area. This painting depicts a fox, which is said to be transformed into a human, checking its own image on the surface of the water under the moonlight.
Yoshitoshi was the last great woodblock print master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, and One Hundred Aspects of the Moon is regarded as his greatest achievement. Yoshitoshi's One Hundred Views of the Moon offers not only a compositional and technical brilliance but also an unfettered passion. From fantastical ghost stories to historical epics, elegant courtesans to fierce samurai, Yoshitoshi casts each tale in the moonlight.
