豊宣は豊国三代の孫で、主に役者絵や武者絵を制作した。中でも「新撰太閤記」シリーズが代表作として挙げられる。
太閤記とは、豊臣秀吉の活躍を描いた伝記物語である。江戸時代においては前の天下人を描く事で風紀が乱れるという理由から浮世絵に描く事が禁じられていたが、明治になってその制約がなくなり、本シリーズでは気兼ねなく生き生きとその歴史を伝えている。西洋の鮮やかな赤顔料なども使用されており、まさに明治の浮世絵らしいシリーズだ。
本作はシリーズの内27枚を画帖に編纂したもの。

Toyonobu was the grandson of Toyokuni Ⅲ and produced mainly actors and warriors works. In particular, the "Shinsen Taiko-ki" (Newly Selected Biography of Taiko Hideyoshi) series is cited as his best-known work.
Taiko-ki is a biographical story about the exploits of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the former shogun. In the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate forbade depicting Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Ukiyo-e prints because they thought depicting the former shogun would disturb public morals. That series is a typical Meiji-era Ukiyoe series, using vivid Western red pigments and showing the actual person with true names.
This piece is a compilation of 27 works into a book. The book is in a wooden box.
