歌舞伎の演目「戻橋」にて、渡辺綱は一条戻橋で見かけた小百合という女性を送ることになったが、水面に映る影を見て彼女が鬼女であると看破する。
女は渡辺綱に襲いかかるが、片腕を斬り落とされて消え去るのであった。

名取春仙は、日本画家として本格的な創作活動を行う一方、夏目漱石、島崎藤村などの新聞小説の挿絵や、石川啄木らの文芸本の装幀口絵等を手がけ、名を広めていった。
また、演劇界との結びつきも深かったことから、役者似顔絵も描いた。
大正時代以降には、版元・渡邊庄三郎のもと、役者絵版画を手がけて好評を博し、明治以来沈滞していた浮世絵版画に新風をもたらした。

In the Kabuki play "Modori-Bashi," Watanabe no Tsuna was walking a woman named Sayuri whom he saw on Ichijo-Modori-Bashi Bridge home. When he saw her shadow on the water, he recognized that she was an ogress.
The ogress attacked him but was cut off one arm and disappeared.

Natori Shunsen, while active as a Japanese-style painter, also became famous for his illustrations for newspaper novels by Natsume Soseki and Shimazaki Toson, as well as the binding illustrations for literary books by Ishikawa Takuboku and others.
In the Taisho era (1912-1926) and later, he produced prints of Kabuki actors' portraits for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, which were very popular and breathe new life into Ukiyo-e print, which had been stagnant since the Meiji era.
