After studying under Gekko, Koka entered the Japanese Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). He exhibited his works at the Bunten Exhibition and the Japan Art Institute Exhibition, and was active as a Japanese-style painter, painting the artworks covering history and customs.
In 1916, at the suggestion of Watanabe Shozaburo, he began to produce Shinhanga prints.
