As the youngest of Kiyochika's students, Kouitsu assisted him with his painting work and also took care of the general household chores of the Kobayashi family.
In 1931, he met Watanabe Shozaburo, who was holding an exhibition commemorating the 17th anniversary of Kiyochika's death, and the following year he published two woodblock prints, " Evening Cherry Blossoms at Gion" and "Moonlit Evening at Osaka Castle," at the "The 3rd exhibition of Modern print” sponsored by Watanabe.
