Ishii Tsuruzo was the younger brother of Ishii Hakutei. He studied sculpture and entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). From the end of the Meiji era, he began interacting with Yamamoto Kanae, and became known as a pioneer of Sosaku Hanga.
