蹴鞠をする猫を描いた団扇絵の作品。
「団扇絵」は、その形状からも分かる通り実際に竹の骨に貼られ団扇として使用されていた。図柄の見本帖として綴じられていたものが稀に現在も良い状態で残っている。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力によって、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

A work of 'Uchiwa-e' depicting a cat playing Kemari, a type of football played by courtiers in ancient Japan.
As can be seen from its shape, the 'Uchiwa-e,' translated as 'fan print', was actually pasted to a bamboo structure and used as an uchiwa fan. Rarely, the print which was bounden in books as sample designs still left in good condition, like this.
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden," which created a sensation and made him famous. After that, he was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi," and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he has created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
