神牛石（しんぎゅうせき）は文字通り牛がうずくまる形をした大きな石で、当時は多くの人々がその姿を一目見ようと押し寄せたという。
本作の文中には、伊勢の国の翁が夢に見て訪れるとそこにこの神牛石が出現していたと記されている。雙栗神社の由緒書きには「天下さわぎあらん時は、此の石より必ず滴りおちて汗の如し、まことに神異をあらわす奇石なり」とあり、その物珍しさと伝説から信仰の対象となっていたようだ。
本作には他の信仰石も数多く描かれている。遠方からやってきたであろう旅装束の人々は、石を前になにやら楽しそうに談議している。さすがに牛には見えないのではないかというようなあきれた表情の者、ただ珍しさを楽しんでいる者、真剣な表情で眺める者。人々の様子は現代の美術鑑賞に近いものもあり面白い。
芳虎は国芳の門人で、幕末から文明開化期にかけて活躍した絵師の一人である。芳虎が最も活躍したのは明治維新前後の目新しい風俗を描いた横浜絵や開化絵の分野で、当時の多くの日本人にとっては未知の外国風景など多くの作品を残した。

The Shingyu-Stone is a large stone whose shape looks like a cow curled up, and at the time, many people flocked to see it.
The text in this work states that this sacred cow stone appeared when an older man from the Land of Ise saw it in a dream. The commentary sign at the Saguri Shrine tells about that legend in the original words of that time "Whenever there is a disturbance in the world, a drop of sweat drips from this stone, and it is truly a strange stone that reveals the divine."
This work also depicts several other stones of worship. People dressed in traveling clothes, who may have come from far away, are discussing something with fun in front of the stone. Some look dismayed as if they might not look like cows; others enjoy the rarity of the stones, while others look at them with serious expressions. They are a little like the way we enjoy art in modern times.
Yoshitora was a pupil of Kuniyoshi and was one of the most active artists from the end of the Edo period to the civilization and opening of Japan. Yoshitora was most active in the Yokohama-e - the artworks related to Yokohama and foreign cultures, and Kaika-e - the artworks depicting new customs and manners around the time of the Meiji Restoration, and produced the artworks of many foreign landscapes most Japanese have not seen at the time.
