火難目石（要石の当て字）と書かれた巨石を勇ましく持ち上げる鯰を描いた一枚。
「鯰絵」は安政2年の大地震の際に大量に制作された。当時、「地震は地下深くの地震鯰が暴れて起こるものであり、鹿島大明神の要石（かなめいし）がその力を封じている」という民間信仰が広く浸透していたためである。鯰をただ面白おかしく描いているわけではなく、地震で混乱する江戸の世相を巧みに諷刺しているというのがその真骨頂であろう。
酒や米を前に力自慢大会のようなていで描かれているのが面白くありつつも、はりきる地震鯰に対し複雑な思いのする作品だ。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

This artwork depicts a catfish lifting a huge stone labeled "Kaname-Ishi" (Kaname-Stone).
Namazu-e, translated as "Catfish Painting," was produced in large numbers during the great earthquake of 1855. The reason for the connection between catfish and earthquakes comes from a folk belief of that time: "Earthquakes were caused by the rampaging of earthquake-catfish sleeping in the deep underground, and the Kanameishi of Kashima-Daimyojin shrine seals their power. "
The true essence of this artwork is that it is not just a funny depiction of catfish but a satire of Edo, which was in turmoil due to the earthquake.
The depiction that the catfish is participating in a bragging contest to get sake and rice is fun, but at the same time, we don't want Namazu to be enthusiastic about it.
The animation movie "Suzume," 2022, in which earthworms run amok, is thought to be based on this legend.
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden," which created a sensation and made him famous. After that, he was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi," and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he has created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
