暁斎は、肉筆や版画と共に「暁斎漫画」や「暁斎鈍画」、「暁斎酔画」など、数多くの絵本を刊行している。その躍動感あふれる筆づかいは、北斎と比べても甲乙付けがたい魅力がある。
暁斎は天保8年に国芳に入門するも、天保11年には狩野派の絵師前村洞和に再入門。洞和は暁斎の画才を愛し、「画鬼」と呼んだという。安政5年に狩野派を離れて「惺々狂斎」と号し、浮世絵を描き始めると、戯画・風刺画で人気を博した。他に万延頃から周麿と称して浮世絵を描き始めている。
明治14年には第2回内国勧業博覧会に出品した「枯木寒鴉図」が「妙技二等賞牌」を受賞。暁斎はこの作品に百円という破格の値段をつけ、周囲から鴉一匹にその値段は高すぎると非難されると、「これは鴉の値段ではなく長年の画技修行の価である」と答えたという。これに心意気を感じた榮太樓本舗店主・細田安兵衛はその値で購入し、周囲を驚かせた。
暁斎は卓越した技術をもっており、人気絵師としてかなりの日本画の注文があったが、外国人からの受注がほとんどであり、作品が海外にあり日本国内では注目されてこなっかった。
近年、海外コレクターの展覧会等が実施され日本国内でも人気が沸騰している。

Kyosai produced many drawing picture books, such as Kyosai Manga, Kyosai Donga (Blunt Drawings), and Kyosai Suiga (Drunken Drawings), in addition to paintings and prints.
Kyosai's lively brushwork is as fascinating as that of Hokusai.
Though Kyosai entered the school of Kuniyoshi, he later decided to become a pupil of Maemura Towa, one of the Kano school's artists.
Towa loved Kyosai's talent and called him a "painting demon ." In 1858, Kyosai left Kano school, named "Seisei Kyosai" himself, and started drawing satires, which gained popularity.
From around 1860, he also used the name "Chikamaro."
In 1881, he exhibited the painting of a crow, and people blamed him because he priced it at a high price; despite that, it was just one crow depicted in the picture. Then Kyosai said. "This price is not for one crow. It is for the time of my painting journey."
Later this painting was purchased by Hosoda Yasubee, and people were surprised.
Sadly, despite his excellent talent and sense of painting, Kyosai's artworks had yet to get the Japanese people's attention. Therefore, most of his artworks were created for exportation.
