This piece is the Kuchi-e, a frontispiece of the novel "Hoken Musume" (Insurance Daughter) by Chizuka Reisui. Although there had been a mutual aid system called "Tanomoshiko" before the Meiji era (1868-1912), it was not until 1881 that "life insurance" was born in Japan. The public widely accepted life insurance, but it also became the subject of novels, as crimes and murders were committed by people who took advantage of it.
Eisen created various artworks as one of a pupil of Eitaku, and gained a reputation. His works are not only paintings but also Kuchi-e, illustrations for books.
