細い竹の骨組みと薄く上質な美濃の和紙を用いる岐阜提灯は、その優れた技巧と優美さから徳川家や大奥でも用いられた歴史を持つ。背景は潔い黒の一色で、美人の透き通るような白い肌と提灯の上品さを際立たせている。

The elegant piece with a beautiful woman lighting a candle of a Gifu paper lantern delicately colored with plants and flowers. Gifu paper lanterns, made of a thin bamboo frame and thin and high-quality Mino washi paper, have a long history. Tokugawa family and the Inner Chambers also loved their superior craftsmanship and elegance.
The background of this piece is pure black, accentuating the woman's skin and the elegance of the lantern.
In 1916, when Ito Shinsui was 18 years old, an exhibition of the pupils of Kiyokata was held. Shinsui exhibited "Woman Looking in a Mirror" at the exhibition, and it fascinated Watanabe Shozaburo. Then Watanabe decided to start making woodcut print works of Shinsui, and later, he produced over 130 printworks from 1916 to 1960.
