畦地がたどりついた主題、それが「山」だ。浅間山、石鎚山…、決して大きいとはいえない版画の画面に、大きく力強い山のすがたを描き、「山の版画家」としての評価を確立した。
その畦地の表現を一変させたのが「山男」の登場である。1952年の国画会秋季展で発表した「山男」の作品は、それまでの山の風景に親しんでいた人びとに驚きを与えたが、素朴で温かな山男は人々の心をつかみ、「山男」は畦地作品の代名詞となっていった。

Azechi's subject matter is "mountains". Azechi established his reputation as a "Mountain printmaker" by depicting large, mighty mountains such as Mt.Asama and Mt.Ishizuchi on his prints, which are not very large.
The "Mountaineer(山男 Yamaotoko)" work he showed at the 1952 Kokuga-kai Autumn Exhibition surprised those familiar with the mountain landscape series. Still, the simple and warm mountaineer captured people's hearts, and "Mountaineer" became a synonym for Azechi's work.
