マウリッツ・エッシャー（1898 - 1972）は、オランダの画家、版画家である。数学の素養にあふれる家系に生まれたが、エッシャーは数学嫌いであった。一方絵の才能は抜きん出たものがあり、建築家になることを望んで両親が入れた建築装飾美術学校でサミュエル・メスキータに才を見出されると、エッシャーはついにその頭角を現し始める。
アルハンブラ宮殿のモザイクに影響を受けた繰り返し模様や、建築不可能な構造物、だまし絵など、奇しくもその独創的な表現には数学的なアプローチも含まれている。表現は幅広く、見るものを飽きさせない魅力がある。

Maurits Escher (1898 - 1972) was a Dutch painter and printmaker. Although born into a family with a strong mathematical background, Escher disliked mathematics. On the other hand, his talent for drawing was outstanding. He finally began to emerge when Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita discovered his talent at university, where his parents enrolled him, hoping he would become an architect.
Oddly enough, his creative expression also includes a mathematical approach, with repetitive patterns influenced by the mosaics of the Alhambra, unbuildable structures, and trompe l'oeil paintings. The range of expression is wide-ranging and fascinating to behold.
