版元 伊場屋久兵衛から刊行された歌麿らしい美人大首絵である。歌麿はその実力を蔦屋重三郎に見出され、狂歌絵本の分野でまずその画才をよく発揮した。狂歌絵本は浮世絵師が書いた絵に対して狂歌師が歌を寄せるというもので、歌麿が携わったものは大変好評で良く売れたという。その後享保の改革によって質素倹約・公序良俗が重んじられ、狂歌絵本の制作が困難になると、やがてこのような美人大首絵を手がけるようになる。寛政5～6年頃に蔦屋との仕事は最も充実していたとされ、同年7年頃から他の版元との仕事が増えたとされる。
歌麿は北斎、広重、写楽と並び、浮世絵の黄金期に美人画絵師として活躍。
狩野派の町絵師・鳥山石燕に学んだ歌麿は、版元・蔦屋重三郎に見出されたのち評判の町娘や遊里の女性たちを魅力的に描き、浮世絵美人画の第一人者として世にその名を知らしめた。
寛政の改革の下でも様々な表現の制約にも屈することなく常に新しい表現手段を模索し続けた歌麿であったが、文化元年に風紀取締りの処分（一説に入牢3日、手鎖50日の刑）を受け、その二年後にこの世を去った。

This work is Bijin Okubi-e style and one of a typical Utamaro work published by the publisher Ibaya Kyubei. Tsutaya Juzaburo recognized Utamaro for his ability, and Utamaro first showed his artistic talent in the field of kyoka-ehon (picture books with Kyoka poems). Kyoka Ehon is a book in which a Kyoka poet contributes a poem to a picture drawn by an Ukiyo-e artist. Later, as the Kyoho Reforms brought a new emphasis on Frugality and Public Order and Morality, the production of Kyoka Ehon became difficult, and Utamaro eventually began to produce such pictures of beautiful women. His work with Tsutaya was most fulfilling around 1793-94, and his work with other publishers increased around 1795.
Utamaro is one of the most famous Ukiyo-e artists as well as Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Sharaku.
He learned the painting as a pupil of Toriyama Sekien, an artist of Kano school, and was discovered talent by Tsutaya Juzaburo, a publisher. After that, he created attractive artworks whose motifs are famous ladies and prostitutes, and it made his name famous.
His creative activity hadn't stopped even in the harsh reforms by the shogunate government, however, he was arrested in 1818 for tightening public morals, and he died 2 years after.
