東海道五十三次は、保永堂によって出版された広重の作品を代表するシリーズである。
当時保永堂はまだ新興の版元で、新しい表現に燃え、エネルギーに満ちあふれていた。広重もそれに触発されてか、意欲的に制作に取り組み、自身の体験をもって臨場感ある豊かな作品に仕上げた。
副題の「白雨」とは俄雨のことで、画面を覆いつくす斜線で表された雨に加えて、風にしなる竹藪がその勢いを物語る。向かい風の中、鍬をかつぎ駆け降りる農夫、半開きの番傘でしのぎつつ先を急ぐ旅人。駕籠屋は雨に背を打たれながらきつい坂を上り、風にあおられる雨除けからのぞく客の手にも力が入っている。

The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido is the most representative series of Hiroshige's works, published by Hoei-do.
At the time, Hoei-do was still a new publisher, actively adopting new expressions and full of energy. Perhaps inspired by this, Hiroshige also worked enthusiastically on the series and created rich works based on his experiences.
The subtitle "Hakuu" refers to a sudden shower. In addition to the rain, which is drawn in diagonal lines covering the picture plane, the bamboo thicket in the background, which bends in the wind, tells of its vigor. A farmer carrying a hoe rushes down into the headwind, while a traveler hurries along with a half-open umbrella. The palanquin-makers hurry up the steep hill, with their backs battered by the rain, and the passenger, glimpsed through the wind-swept rain shelter, clenches his fist.
