川中島の戦いは 1553 年（天文 22 年）～ 1564 年（永禄 7 年）にかけて、「武田信玄」と「上杉謙信」の間で 5 回行なわれた。作品には 1561 年（永禄 4 年）の第 4 次「川中島の戦い」が描かれている。合戦のさなか、「武田信玄」と「上杉謙信」両陣営の旗本が入り乱れての大混戦となる。武田信玄の身辺が手薄になったと見て、上杉謙信は風のように武田信玄の本陣へ切り込んでいく。馬を駆る上杉謙信の勇猛果敢な姿が描かれ、川中島の戦いで一番の名場面と言われている。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇の日々を過ごしたが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たす。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

The Battle of Kawanakajima broke out five times between 'Takeda Shingen' and 'Uesugi Kenshin' between 1553 and 1564. This work depicts the fourth 'Battle of Kawanakajima' in 1561. The bannermen from both the 'Takeda Shingen' and 'Uesugi Kenshin' camps were mixed up. Seeing that Takeda Shingen's forces were weak, Uesugi Kenshin rushed like the wind into Takeda Shingen's main camp. The scene is said to be the most famous scene of the Battle of Kawanakajima, depicting the valor and daring of Uesugi Kenshin on horseback.
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei period, he published "The 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", it created a sensation and made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi" and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he has created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
