誠忠義士肖像では、国芳が西洋画法を意識し、リアルな肖像画を目指して忠臣蔵に登場する藩士たちを描いていることが見て取れる。シリーズのうち何点かは、ヨハン・ニューホフ(1618-1672)の記した「東西海陸紀行」の銅版画挿絵から構図を転用したことが分かっている。「東西海陸紀行」は江戸後期の画家であり蘭学者としても知られた石川大浪(1765-1817)の死後、国芳の手に渡ったとされる。

In Portraits of Faithful Warriors of True Loyalty, it can be seen that Kuniyoshi aimed to create realistic portraits of the feudal warriors who appeared in Chushingura, with an awareness of Western painting methods. Some of the works in the series are known to have been adapted from the copperplate illustrations in Johan Nieuhof's (1618-1672) "Voyages & Travels to the East Indies 1653-1670". It is said that book came into Kuniyoshi's possession after the death of Ishikawa Tairo (1765-1817), a painter and Dutch scholar in the late Edo period.
