宇治川を前に、先陣争いをする２騎の武者は、佐々木四郎高綱と梶原源太景季。頼朝より賜った名馬「生唼」を駆る高綱は何としても先陣を切りたい。そこで先を行く景季に馬の腹帯が緩んでいると声をかける。慌てて帯を締め直す景季。その横を追い越し、川に飛び込む高綱。当代一の名馬「生唼」は、宇治川の速い流れを、力強く一文字に対岸へと渡りきらんとす。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

The two warriors vying for the lead in front of the Uji River were Sasaki Shiro Takatsuna and Kajiwara Genta Kagesue. Takatsuna, riding the famous horse "Ikezuki" given to him by Yoritomo, wanted to lead the battle at all costs. Takatsuna, riding Surusumi, a famous horse given to him by also Yoritomo, wants to lead the way at all costs, so he calls out to Kagesue that his horse's girth is loose. He hurriedly tightens the belt. Takatsuna passes him and jumps into the river. The most famous horse of the day, "Ikezuki," crosses the fast flowing Uji River to the other side of the river in a single powerful movement.
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "The 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", it created a sensation and made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi" and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he has created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
