襲いかかる鼬と、それに抗する雄鶏の図。この図は暁斎が描いた図案に学び描かれたもので、そっくりな元図が暁斎楽画に存在している。暁斎の得意とした迫力のある構図と、古邨（豊邨）が得意とした輸出工芸品としての花鳥画がもつ優雅さがうまく合わさっている。
古邨は、花鳥画を得意とした鈴木華邨に師事し、日本画を習得。やがてアーネスト・フェノロサの指導のもと、古邨と号して肉筆の花鳥画を発表した。その後、明治38年頃から木版画作品の制作を開始したと考えられる。画号は明治期、大黒屋において「古邨」、昭和以降、渡辺版画店において「祥邨」、その後主に酒井川口合版において「豊邨」と移り変わる。
古邨は生涯で500点以上の作品を制作したが、出版当時は国外での需要がその大半を占め、日本国内では知る人ぞ知る絵師であった。近年、日本国内でも展覧会が開催され再評価の機運が高まっている。

A piece of an attacking weasel and a resisting rooster. This piece was based on a design by Kyosai, and an identical original design exists in Kyosai's book, "Kyosai Rakuga." The powerful composition, Kyosai's forte, and the elegance of flower-and-bird painting as an export craft, Hoson's (Koson's) forte, are well combined.
Koson studied Japanese painting under Suzuki Kason, who specialized in flower-and-bird paintings. After that, under Ernest Fenollosa, he began to produce flower-and-bird paintings under the name Koson. He is thought to have started producing woodblock prints around 1905. The artist's name changed from "Koson" at Daikokuya during the Meiji period to "Shoson" at Watanabe Print Shop during the Showa period and to "Hoson," mainly at Sakai Kawaguchi.
Koson produced more than 500 works during his lifetime, but at the time of publication, the majority of his work was in demand outside Japan, and he was not a well-known painter in Japan. In recent years, exhibitions have been held in Japan, and there is growing momentum for a reappraisal.
