名取春仙といえば迫力あふれる役者絵が思い浮かぶが、こちらは何とも可愛らしい猫の描かれた作品である。昭和３年、渡辺版画店より「犬猫五態」というシリーズで、猫や仔犬の木版画５点が出版された。
名取春仙は、日本画家として本格的な創作活動を行う一方、夏目漱石、島崎藤村などの新聞小説の挿絵や、石川啄木らの文芸本の装幀口絵等を手がけ、名を広めていった。
また、演劇界との結びつきも深かったことから、役者似顔絵も描いた。
大正時代以降には、版元・渡邊庄三郎のもと、役者絵版画を手がけて好評を博し、明治以来沈滞していた浮世絵版画に新風をもたらした。

While Natori Shunsen's dynamic actor pictures come to mind, this is a rare work depicting very lovely cats. In 1928, five woodblock prints of cats and puppies were published by Watanabe Print Shop in a series " Five Styles of Dog and Cat ".
Natori Shunsen, while active as a Japanese-style painter, also became famous for his illustrations for newspaper novels by Natsume Soseki and Shimazaki Toson, as well as the binding illustrations for literary books by Ishikawa Takuboku and others.
In the Taisho era (1912-1926) and later, he produced prints of Kabuki actors' portraits for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, which were very popular and breathed new life into Ukiyo-e print, which had been stagnant since the Meiji era.
