横に視線を向ける港の女。異国情緒あふれる背景は、川西が継続して描いた神戸の街だろうか。赤い指輪をして、洋風の内装の室内で退屈そうな表情を浮かべる彼女は、都会らしい時間の流れの中を生きている。
こちらは、働く女、都会の女、湯上がりの女など、複数の絵師が様々な日本の女の様子を描いた版画集「日本女俗選」の内の一枚。すべて中判サイズ（おおよそ26.5×19.5cmほど）で制作されている。
川西 英（かわにし ひで 1894 -1965）は兵庫津で生まれ、竹久夢二や山本鼎に感銘を受け、独学で木版画の技術を習得した。描かれた風景は、外国文化があふれる神戸の街で生まれ育った川西がまさに目にしてきたものであり、川西のフィルターを通して見たそれらは、新鮮さや明るさにあふれている。代表作である『神戸百景』のシリーズは、戦前・戦後それぞれ制作されており、戦後の『新･神戸百景』では、時代の流れによって変化する神戸をまた違った印象で見せている。

A port town woman gazing off to the side. The exotic background is probably the city of Kobe, which Kawanishi continuously painted. Wearing a red ring and looking bored in a room with a Western-style interior, she is living in a city time.
This is one of a series of prints from the "Women's Customs of Japan (日本女俗選)" series, in which several artists depicted various aspects of Japanese women, including working women, city women, and women after taking a hot bath, etc. All pieces are produced in Chu-ban size (approximately 26.5 x 19.5 cm).
Kawanishi Hide (1894 -1965) was born in Hyogo-no-Tsu, nearby Kobe, and inspired by Takehisa Yumeji and Yamamoto Kanae. He taught himself the art of woodblock printmaking. The landscapes depicted are things Kawanishi has seen first-hand, having been born and raised in Kobe, a city where foreign culture flourished. Seen through Kawanishi's filter, these vivid landscapes are full of freshness and brightness. The series of his best-known works, "100 Views of Kobe," were produced before and after WWⅡ, and the post-war "New 100 Views of Kobe" shows a different impression of Kobe as it changed with time.
