Sadahide, a student of Kunisada, excelled at exquisite bird's-eye views and became so popular that he was ranked first in the Ukiyo-e painter's ranking in the first year of Meiji.
This work depicts a battle at the Minatogawa River in Settsu Province during the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties as described in the Taiheiki. Among Emperor Godaigo's forces, 700 cavalrymen led by Masashige Kusunoki fought undaunted against 100,000 Ashikaga's army but were defeated and committed suicide.
