「二十四孝（にじゅうしこう）」とは、二十四の優れた孝行の話を編纂した中国の書物である。国芳による「二十四孝童子鑑」は、その二十四孝のそれぞれの話に絡めた図を集めたシリーズで、横画面に大きく描かれた絵には風景画としての面白さも見られる。
この「孟宗」では、病床で筍が食べたいという母の為に、雪の中探しに行く孟宗（もうそう）が描かれている。話の中では、季節故に筍が見つからずも天に祈りながら雪を掘り続けると、たちまち雪が解けて母に振る舞うことができたという。

Mirror of the 24 Paragons of Filial Piety" by Kuniyoshi is a series of prints featuring illustrations related to each of the 24 stories of filial piety, and the large horizontal illustrations are also interesting as landscapes.
In this "Moso," Moso is depicted as a man who goes looking for bamboo sprouts in the snow for his mother, who is sick in bed and wants to eat them. In the story, he could not find the bamboo shoots because of the season, but he did not give up and kept digging in the snow while praying, and soon the snow melted and he was able to serve them to his mother.
