Kobori Tomoto (1864-1931) was born the third son of a farmer and first learned painting from his father and older brother. He later studied Japanese and Chinese studies, as well as painting in various schools, and after serving as a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and as an exhibition juror, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure. He was also passionate about studying the historical background of the people of his time, which deepened his understanding of the subject matter and led to the weighty depictions in his paintings.
