この口絵作品は、『文藝倶楽部』18巻6号《都鳥》に附録していたもの。口絵は本の附録として制作されたものであるが、そのクオリティは非常に高く、繊細な線の表現は浮世絵に劣らない。
都鳥というと、在原業平の歌が有名だ。「名にし負はば いざ言問はむ 都鳥 わが思ふ人は ありやなしやと」、現代語に訳すと「都という名を持った都鳥よ、さあ尋ねよう。わたしの恋人が無事かどうかを。」という内容で、遠く離れた恋人の事を想う歌となっている。
友に慰められる女性の表情は切なく、繊細に描かれている。

清方は年方の門下で、十代にしてすでにプロの挿絵画家として活躍していた。青年期に泉鏡花と知り合い、その挿絵を描いたことや、幼少時の環境の影響もあり、終生江戸情緒及び浮世絵の美とは離れることがなかった。
肉筆作品にも力を注ぎ、日本を代表する美人画家のひとりに数えられる。

This Kuchi-e print was attached to the novel "Miyakodori(*1)" in the book "Bungei Club," Vol. 18, No. 6.
Although Kuchi-e was produced as an appendix to the book, the quality is very high, and the delicate lines are no less than those of Ukiyo-e.
The word "Miyakodori (*1)" evokes us a famous poem by Ariwara no Narihira. The poem, translated into modern Japanese, means, "Miyakodori. You have a name means metropolitan bird. Let me ask you if my lover is safe." The song is about a distant lover.
The expression on the woman's face as she is comforted by her friend is wistful and delicate.
(*1) 都鳥 (Miyakodori) is another name for a black‐headed gull. Miyako means Metropolitan, and dori (tori) means bird.
Kiyokata was a pupil of Toshikata and was already active as a professional illustrator in his teens. He became acquainted with Izumi Kyoka in his youth, and throughout his life, he continued to work with Edo sentiment and the beauty of Ukiyo-e.
