Takahashi Shotei (1871 - 1945) was an Ukiyo-e artist born in Asakusa, Tokyo. After studying Japanese-style painting and working as an illustrator, around 1906 he began producing Ukiyo-e reproductions, which is said to be how he came to know Watanabe Shozaburo, who later became the publisher of Shin-Hanga. Shotei's prints were highly regarded for their quality, prompting Watanabe to produce "Shinsaku-Hanga" for export. Additionally, Watanabe produced more than 500 of Shotei's "Shin-Hanga" prints (distinct from Shinsaku-Hanga), but the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 destroyed the woodblocks and prints. Some of the prints were carefully reproduced afterwards, making pre-earthquake works rare.
"弘明" is another name for Shotei. Shopping Guide & Information of the Japanese Prints
